Why Your Application Essays are so Important

November 13, 2023

Why are my Application Essays so important? It’s a fair question to ask, especially if you have just begun applying to colleges, or have never had to write one before. The Application Essay, or Personal Statement as it is commonly called by schools, can have specific prompts to write on or it just might be a way for you to illustrate who you are as a person and as a candidate through your writing. These essays are paramount to your applications, and here’s why:

They Offer Individuality: The essay allows applicants to showcase their unique personalities, experiences, and perspectives. It provides a platform for students to express themselves in a way that goes beyond grades and test scores, helping admissions officers understand who the applicant is as an individual, not just a collection of statistics

They Offer a Theatre to Reflect on Experiences: Personal Statements often encourage applicants to reflect on significant experiences or challenges as they relate to what the school or organization values. This reflection can provide insights into your character, resilience, and self-awareness.

They Give you a Chance to Tell Your Stories: An engaging Personal Statement can captivate the reader's attention. Effective storytelling can make you more memorable and leave a laying impact and a positive impression on the admissions those who read them. If you want to make a memorable indentation on your application, this is how you can do it.

They Demonstrate how Good of a Match You Are: All Colleges have specific values, missions, and cultures. The essay allows you to demonstrate how your values align with or can complement those of the institution, indicating a good fit between the student and the institution. Finding ways to appeal to the values of a college is often underrated, but extremely important.

Your Personal Statement and how you paint the picture of yourself that schools will see is imperative to your success as an applicant. Take the extra time to write it the right way, and look for help when you need it, it can have lasting effects on the opportunities you have in the future.
